Soul & Motown
Soul music is a style of 'African American' originating in the 1950's and 60's
It was heavily influenced by 'Rhythm and Blues' and 'Gospel'
Motown is a sub-genre of Soul music which is a more polished 'commercial' form of Soul music.
This originated from Berry Gordy's record label 'Tamla Motown' which was founded in Detroit. The label was sucessful in createing an 'act' rather than just recording songs. Their artists were taught how to dance and styled.
The label was hugely sucessful in promoting black artists at a time of racial segregation.
